ROANOKE COUNTY, VA — The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Roanoke County, the City of Roanoke, and the City of Salem, effective until 1:30 a.m. EDT on Friday, August 9.

As of 5:32 p.m. EDT, Doppler radar detected bands of heavy rain moving through the warned area, with rainfall totals of 2 to 2.5 inches reported over the past few hours. Additional rainfall of 1.5 to 2.5 inches is expected, with rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour as the storm continues to move from the east.

Flash flooding is either ongoing or anticipated shortly.

The flash flooding is likely to affect small creeks, streams, urban areas, highways, streets, and low-lying locations, including Roanoke, Salem, Vinton, Catawba, Bent Mountain, Cave Spring, and Poages Mill. Specific streams and drainages at risk include Big Bear Rock Branch, Buffalo Creek, Brake Branch, Carvin Creek, and Back Creek.

Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution, especially during nighttime hours when the dangers of flooding are harder to identify.

The public is urged to avoid flooded areas and seek higher ground if necessary.

    Atlantic City Police Arrest Elderly Man Threatening Murder-Suicide

    ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — A 75-year-old Missouri man was arrested in Atlantic City on Saturday night after allegedly threatening to kill himself and a woman during a domestic dispute, according to the Atlantic City Police Department. Officers responding to the incident recovered a loaded handgun from the scene.

    The incident occurred on August 17 at approximately 9:30 p.m. in a motel on the beach block of Iowa Avenue. Police were alerted to the situation after it was reported that James Pace, of Blue Springs, Missouri, had threatened to shoot both himself and a woman he was in a relationship with during an argument. The threats were made while Pace was in possession of a firearm.

    Upon arrival, officers located Pace and arrested him without incident. A loaded handgun and additional ammunition were recovered from the scene. Following his arrest, Pace was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Division, for evaluation.

    Pace has been charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and terroristic threats.

    The Atlantic City Police Department has not released further details as the investigation continues.

    Two Dead in Wrong-Way Crash on Dupont Parkway in Middletown

    MIDDLETOWN, Del. — A wrong-way crash on Dupont Parkway early Sunday morning claimed the lives of two Smyrna residents, according to the Delaware State Police. The collision, which occurred around 12:30 a.m. on August 18, is under investigation.

    Authorities reported that a blue 2022 Honda Civic was heading southbound on Dupont Parkway, near the intersection with Harris Road, when it was struck by a northbound black 2015 Jeep Wrangler traveling in the wrong direction. The front of the Jeep collided with the Honda in the left southbound lane.

    The driver of the Honda, a 62-year-old man, and his passenger, a 51-year-old woman, were pronounced dead at the scene. Both victims were from Smyrna, Delaware. Their identities are being withheld pending notification of their family.

    The driver of the Jeep, a 28-year-old woman from Massey, Maryland, was critically injured and transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

    The section of Dupont Parkway where the crash occurred was closed for approximately four hours as authorities conducted their investigation and cleared the scene.

    The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit is leading the investigation. No further details have been released at this time.
